When Toyota penned the second generation Hilux Surf, they likely had no idea they were designing one of the most resilient SUV platforms of the modern age. Over thirty years later, it's easy to see why these trucks are still so popular, with examples like this 1994 SSR-X pulling serious duty on our stateside shores.
Exterior Overview
When Toyota penned the second generation Hilux Surf, they likely had no idea they were designing one of the most resilient SUV platforms of the modern age. Over thirty years later, it’s easy to see why these trucks are still so popular, with examples like this 1994 SSR-X pulling serious duty on our stateside shores. Finished in a fresh coat of Ocean Gem (795), it’s a looker too, and is set off by all the options and examples enthusiasts yearn for, including a polished Aiba Works brushguard, and dual driving lamps! An optional rear spare tire carrier and hatch spoiler sets off the rear fascia, and the aesthetic is polished off with OEM rainguards and 16″ multipiece BERG alloys. Simple and spartan, this body-on-frame beast boasts only 137k verified/documented miles on the odometer, which is lightly traveled for a vehicle of this vintage. Best of all, the turbodiesel powerplant under the hood is fresh off an extensive recent service, including a new timing belt and water pump, making this truck a killer daily driver, off-grid office, or road trip runabout. With a timeless silhouette and rock-solid mechanicals, there’s no doubt this Surf is one sweet Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
The interior feels classic, and has plenty of modern amenities to both assist and pamper you throughout your day to day. It’s also in terrific shape and was clearly cared for in a prior life. The seats are upholstered in a durable patterned cloth, and the dash and accents are finished in a gray charcoal trim. Save for some pinholes to the driver’s bolster and a couple nicks on the center console lid, the interior materials are in good shape overall. The center stack features an easy to use climate control unit, and an upgraded Jensen touch screen, with Carplay, US FM compatibility, and a backup camera to make sure your spare tire doesn’t ding the car behind you. If you prefer to listen to the turbodiesel’s soundtrack, you can unfurl the power rear window and an optional power moonroof to let in a fresh breeze. Also fully functional are power windows, mirrors, and locks which aid daily use. The latter also features keyless entry to make cabin access seamless. The rear bench is spacious, and can fold flat to expand the cargo hold. The tweed headliner is in good shape, and the rest of the materials show well, from the black accented door cards to the plush carpet beneath. Save for some cracks on the interior sunroof trim, it’s hard to complain about this do-it-all cockpit!
Mechanical Overview
The 1KZ-TE powering this body on frame beast is a stout motor with a global reputation. We’ve easily sold hundreds of Surfs with this powerplant at this point, so the next owner should feel good about running and maintaining it stateside. It’s also gone through a comprehensive service here, and cranks over swiftly thanks to a factory dual battery system. A new muffler was installed so it sounds right, and we’ve set the next owner up nicely for future maintenance by installing a brand new timing belt and water pump kit. A new thermostat was also installed, and we flushed the cooling system and aluminum radiator full of new juice. New serpentine belts drive your accessories reliably, and we buttoned up maintenance on this 3.0TD with a new valve cover gasket, new half moon seals, and an oil and filter change. The automatic gearbox shifts predictably and benefits from a fresh fluid service and a new transmission pan gasket to boot. Popular for overlanding, selective 4WD is a must, and 4WD low is also handy for when the going gets tough. The transfer case benefits from a new front left CV axle and a front output seal, for good measure. The stock suspension is comfortable, and new rear swaybar bushings were installed to help this Surf pass state inspection. This N130 gobbles up any loose terrain in its way, and it can steer and stop on a dime, making daily driving a breeze. The Falken rubber is knee deep in tread and even matches on the factory spare. Last but certainly not least, we gave this rig a fresh alignment on our rack. Style, service, and interior swag, what more could you possibly want out of an SUV?
