This 1998 Delica Chamonix is more than meets the eye, with a potent turbodiesel powerplant, surefooted Super Select 4WD, and unique exterior and interior styling.
Exterior Overview
With a name that phonetically translates to “Delivery Car” most folks wouldn’t expect the Mitsubishi Delica to have so much personality. This 1998 Delica Chamonix is more than meets the eye, with a potent turbodiesel powerplant, surefooted Super Select 4WD, and unique exterior and interior styling. Finished in Mystic Black (X08), this facelifted hauler is set off by dual front fog lamps, an optional OEM skid plate, color-matched headlamps, and a rear bash bar. For a 28 year old transporter, the 116k verified miles are impressive too, and this special van is barely broken in. Sure, there are some light chips, dings, and minor fading in the paintwork, but the cosmetics are in good condition overall, and this Mitsu would be a marvelous campsite crusader, road trip companion, or even a determined daily driver. Swagger and style aside, this is a capable van, a unique design, and a surefire Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
It’s not often we receive an interior here that outshines its exterior tenfold, but the Chamonix package brings the heat in terms of cabin styling. Bespoke blue patterned cloth spans three rows of versatile seating, and even matches the carpeting beneath. Up top, passengers benefit from an optional high-roof, which features thicker insulation to keep occupants cozy on cold weather campouts. For summer cruising, the digital automatic climate control display can funnel cold A/C through both front and rear climate zones, with hot heat close behind if needed. We also took care of a new A/C compressor to keep the system tip-top. Adjacent to the HVAC, upgraded Panasonic audio is nestled in the center stack with Bluetooth functionality. For a more natural soundtrack, the driver gains power windows up front as well. Power locks, keyless entry, and electric side mirrors all assist daily use, and to make entry into the cabin easier for your passengers, an automatic step unfurls upon opening the sliding door. If your priority is to store cargo, not companions, the third row seating can deploy off to the side. It can easily be put back into action, and the middle bench even swivels for ultimate road trip camaraderie. Total seating capacity equals eight, and it’s hard to find defects in the upholstery, save for a previous repair to the rear seatback. The headliner and carpets are tidy, and overall, the pilot shouldn’t find much to scrutinize about the interior condition, save for some scratches and stains on the seat plastics and a slightly warped headliner.
Mechanical Overview
Under the hood is a tried and true powertrain, with more than enough grunt to putt along on our stateside shores. The 4M40 turbodiesel engine is fresh off a recent service, and benefits from two new 12v batteries and a fresh set of glow plugs to aid ignition. We shored up a pesky oil leak with a new oil pan gasket, and this 2.8l is fresh off an oil and filter service. Earning high marks on efficiency, it’s torquey where it counts, and a new engine air filter and fuel filter keep unwanted contaminants out of your combustion chamber. A smooth shifting automatic gearbox puts power down to the ground and a super select transfercase allows the driver to shift from 2WD to 4WD on the fly, benefitting from a fresh fluid flush on the front differential. For real off-road expeditions, the center differential can be locked, and low gearing is on hand if needed. The stock suspension cruises comfortably, and the van’s long wheelbase makes interstate cruising a stress free affair. The power steering is easy to control, and ABS brakes keep stopping distances to a minimum. The factory alloys are refinished to match the exterior aesthetic and shod in fresh Falken 30″ rubber. Freshly aligned, you’ll be covered for tens of thousands of miles of unencumbered cruising in this black beauty!
