Exterior Overview
Nothing sets the standard for durability, quality, and comfort quite like Toyota’s 100 series Land Cruiser. Mix in a tenacious turbodiesel driveline, and you have a recipe for serious fun, both on and off-tarmac! Our 1998 HDJ101 Land Cruiser is a solid unit, finished in Warm Silver Metallic (1B1), and set off by stylish FRP fender flares, a factory front valance, and an optional OEM rear spoiler. LED tail lamps, side winkers, and puddle lights improve illumination, and silver TRD-style alloys , OEM rainguards, and a pricey Ganador quad exhaust round off this Cruiser’s one of a kind aesthetic. Save for a few age-related paint defects, the cosmetics are in good shape overall, and the 157k verified and documented miles on the clock are a fraction of what typical Stateside models are sold with. Underpinned by a downright desirable drivetrain, this 100 series’ driving dynamics are second to none. Efficient, powerful, and frugal, it’s one heck of a truck, and the Full-Time 4WD system is ideal for year-round use! One drive behind the wheel and it’s easy to see, this is a Japanese Classic truck for the ages!
Interior Overview
The interior is upholstered with custom tan leather seat skins that show fine for their age, aside from some wear and tear. It was also clearly well cared for in a prior life and is jam-packed with functional and accessible power equipment. It serves up ample head and legroom, compared to the 80 series that preceded it, and is safer too, thanks to the inclusion of standard dual front SRS airbags and ABS. The driver can maximize comfort behind the stylish woodgrain steering wheel with a tilt-adjustable steering column and power lumbar adjustment. All passengers can breathe easy as the digital automatic climate control features cold A/C and hot heat. Adjacent to the HVAC, Pioneer audio works like a charm and roars throughout the cabin. It’s Bluetooth equipped, too, so the pilot can keep their eyes on the road for safety’s sake. If you prefer the soundtrack of nature or the raucous turbodiesel, all power windows unfurl with haste, and power locks and electric folding side mirrors are on hand too to assist daily use. This example was even spec’d with an OEM electric moonroof, which can tilt and retract. The rear bench is versatile. It flips completely forward to maximize the cargo hold, and reclines to maximize road trip comfort. The headliner is tidy, and the carpets have resisted the past few decades of use, although the trunk carpet was removed by the previous Japanese owner. Save for some previous modifications to the rear cargo area trim, there’s little to scrutinize overall!
Mechanical Overview
The drivetrain of this Cruiser is as good as gold, and the 1HD-FTE under the bonnet is highly desired by enthusiasts. These tough turbodiesels are not only reliable and powerful, but they’re frugal to operate as a whole. We’ve done the legwork of fully servicing this J100, and she cranks over with haste, care of 2 new 12v batteries. Handling one of the most costly preventative maintenance items, the timing belt and water pump were replaced by our trained technicians. We also preemptively replaced the fuel filter, and a new engine air filter keeps pesky contaminants from entering the 4.2L. We shored up any leaks with a new valve cover gasket, and topped it off with a fresh oil and filter service. With the maintenance performed, this 1HD runs like a champ, and an automatic gearbox sends power to all four wheels via a selective transfer case. For true off-road escapades and beach outings, a low range and center locker improve grip tenfold on loose surfaces. Unfortunately, the rear locker is no longer operable. We also installed a brand new Eibach lift kit with ARB lift springs for extra clearance off the beaten path. For a bit of drivetrain rehab, we installed new front and rear swaybar links and bushings. The ABS brakes bite hard, thanks to new pads in the rear, and additional grip comes courtesy of four new Falken all-terrain tires we installed in the shop. New inner and outer tie rods were installed to dial in a fresh alignment, and we installed new bellows boots while we were in there. With the maintenance performed, this truck will track straight as an arrow, and the new 34″ Falken rubber will last for tens of thousands of miles to come!
