Exterior Overview
Finally, you don’t have to compromise on options, equipment, or drivability to get into a family-friendly Japanese adventure van. This 1999 Mitsubishi Delica is one of the most well-equipped models we’ve seen thus far, and with an engine sold here in the States, servicing is easy as pie. Finished in a Coronado Sand Metallic/Grey Metallic (A26/A37) two-tone, this van is unique, capable, cool, and has only one recorded owner from new. This facelift model is accented by updated angular bodywork, an OEM power passenger step rail, OEM optional dual driving lamps, a factory rear spoiler, and OEM rainguards on the front windows. The 25-year-old cosmetics are simple and clean, and save for a few age-related chips, dings, and defects, we think the next owner will find little to nitpick cosmetically. Best of all, this lovely van boasts 61k verified and documented miles on the odometer and is fresh off a comprehensive recent service here in the shop. Backed by a world-class 4×4 drivetrain and with a global reputation that precedes itself, this terrific transporter would excel at being a dedicated daily or weekend trail warrior. We can call this Mitsubishi a lot of things, but above all else, we must call it a Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
The cabin caters to the adventurous, even if your adventures typically end at the Chick Fil A drive-thru with a gaggle of kids in the back. The seating arrangements are among the most versatile we’ve seen, and a full slate of power equipment leaves little to be desired for daily use. The grey cloth upholstery is darn tough and shows no major rips, stains, or tears from daily use. This facelifted model includes improved power switchgear, and some added safety equipment, like dual SRS airbags. The driver can command power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors from up front, and there’s even a massive central power moonroof that unfurls all the way. It works in tandem with an electric sunroof up front to funnel natural ventilation into the cabin. If you prefer
ice
cold A/C or hot heat, a digital dual-zone climate control system is easy to command, which services passengers in all three rows. For campsite camaraderie, the middle captain’s chairs can swivel to face the rear. All three rows also fold flat if you need to catch a quick snooze. OEM audio keeps the cabin supplied with tunes, and the dash materials, door cards, carpet, and headliner are all in good shape. Still, on a vehicle of this vintage, perfection isn’t possible, and we wanted to note the upper accessory compartment is missing its lid. Still, we think the condition of this cabin is really impressive, especially by modern car standards, and the factory carpet mats are included up front to sweeten the deal!
Mechanical Overview
Under the hood, Mitsubishi’s stout 6G72 engine keeps this van moving. Keen enthusiasts might recognize this powerplant from USDM models, which means the overall ownership experience
on
this van is automatically easier than one might expect. Our trained technicians have taken care of a comprehensive service to get you ready for the road ahead, and this Delica cranks over swiftly, courtesy of a new 12V battery. We tended to a new engine air filter and fuel filter for a bit of a tune-up, and this low-mileage hauler drives like a dream. The engine oil and filter were also replaced, for good measure. The engine makes sufficient power and torque, making highway hauls a breeze, and power is sent straight to an automatic gearbox, which shifts smoothly and is fresh off a full fluid flush. Power is distributed care of a Super Select 4WD transfercase. It uses a real deal gear selector, and this cutting-edge unit allows the driver to switch between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. It also has an option to lock the center differential and engage low gearing if you get stuck. The suspension on this van is comfortable and benefits from new front swaybar links. The other suspension components passed the VA state safety inspection with flying colors. The power steering is direct, and this Delica can come to a screeching halt thanks to standard ABS. Last, but certainly not least, the factory alloys were wrapped in fresh all terrain tires. After a fresh alignment, you should be able to track straight and stay glued to the pavement for tens of thousands of miles to come!
