Subaru · Horizontally opposed 4-cylinder (boxer) · Turbocharged (IHI TD04 / IHI VF turbo family depending on variant)
EJ20
The EJ20 is Subaru's 2.0-litre horizontally opposed (boxer) four-cylinder engine, produced from 1989 and fitted across the Impreza, Forester, Legacy, and related platforms in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations. The turbocharged variants — designated EJ20G, EJ20K, EJ205, and EJ207 — are the versions relevant to performance import buyers. The EJ207 (used in JDM WRX STI GD/GR/GV chassis) is the highest-output factory variant at 280 PS JDM-spec, with the AVCS variable cam system and a closed-deck block. The EJ20's horizontally opposed layout and front-to-rear symmetrical AWD integration are distinctive engineering choices that define the Subaru performance identity across the GC8, GD, and Forester SF/SG generations.

Variants
- EJ20G (GC8 WRX 1992–1996)
- First-generation turbocharged EJ20. Open-deck block. IHI TD04 turbo. JDM WRX: 240 PS. Revised fuel and ignition maps vs. NA. Prone to head gasket failure at elevated boost.
- EJ20K (GC8 WRX STI 1994–2000)
- Semi-closed-deck block. Higher boost target. JDM STI variants: 250–260 PS. Improved head gasket sealing over EJ20G.
- EJ205 (GD/GG WRX 2000–2007; SF/SG Forester XT)
- Open-deck block. IHI VF34/VF36 turbo family. JDM WRX: 250 PS. Used across GD Impreza WRX and SG Forester XT variants. Identified by AVCS intake cam timing on JDM spec.
- EJ207 (GD/GR/GV WRX STI 2000–2014)
- Closed-deck block for higher structural rigidity. IHI VF37/VF43 turbo. JDM WRX STI: 280 PS (voluntary cap). Most desirable turbocharged variant; open-deck EJ205 not used in STI applications.

Common issues
Head gasket failure (EJ20G open-deck)
Cause: Open-deck block design allows cylinder wall flex under boost; OEM multi-layer steel HGS prone to failure between cylinders 2–3 and 3–4 on high-mileage or boosted examples.
Remedy: OEM upgraded MLS head gaskets with ARP head studs; retorque at 1,000 km post-replacement. A pre-purchase compression and leakdown test is standard practice on GC8-era EJ20G.
Spun rod bearing (EJ205 at high power)
Cause: Open-deck block less tolerant of sustained high-boost operation; oil quality and interval are primary preventive factors.
Remedy: Use 5W-30 full synthetic; change at 5,000 km intervals on any boosted EJ205. Rod bearing inspection recommended at 100,000 km on higher-output variants.
Boost creep (Forester XT SG EJ205)
Cause: Stock VF36 actuator spring rate does not hold target on some high-flow exhausts; boost rises beyond target under hard pulls.
Remedy: Stiffer actuator spring or external wastegate; confirmed via boost logger before raising fuel delivery.
Tuning ceiling
~350 whp on stock EJ205 bottom end with bolt-ons. EJ207 closed-deck block supports 400+ whp with appropriate supporting modifications. Open-deck EJ20G/EJ205 block is the limiting factor for high-boost builds.
ECU tune (COBB AccessPort or Ecutek RaceROM), catback exhaust, up-pipe, TMIC-to-FMIC conversion, larger MAF sensor calibration.
VF48 or Blouch Dominator 1.5XT turbo, 1,050cc injectors, TGV deletes, E85 or 100-octane, upgraded TMIC or FMIC.
Closed-deck block (EJ257 or 'EJ20K' closed-deck), forged pistons (Wiseco), H-beam rods, Precision or Garrett GT35R equivalent, 2,000cc injectors, standalone ECU.
Common modifications
- COBB AccessPort or Ecutek RaceROM ECU tune
- Turbo upgrade (VF48 or aftermarket IHI equivalent for EJ205; VF52/VF53 for EJ207)
- Front-mount intercooler (FMIC) conversion from TMIC
- TGV (Tumble Generator Valve) deletes
- Larger fuel injectors (1,050cc+)
- Short-ram or cold-air intake
- Catback exhaust (3") — mandatory for heat management in STI applications
Frequently asked questions
- What is the EJ20 and what cars use it?
- The EJ20 is Subaru's 2.0-litre horizontally opposed (boxer) four-cylinder, produced in naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations from 1989. Turbocharged variants powered the Impreza WRX (GC8, GD, GR/GV) and the Forester XT (SF, SG). The EJ20 was replaced in most applications by the EJ25 (2.5L) and later the FA20 for international markets, but remained in JDM WRX STI use through the GV/GR generation into the 2010s.
- What is the difference between EJ205 and EJ207?
- The EJ205 uses an open-deck block and is fitted to the WRX (non-STI) and Forester XT. The EJ207 uses a semi-closed or closed-deck block for higher structural rigidity and is fitted exclusively to the WRX STI. The EJ207 supports higher sustained power output before block flex becomes a factor; the EJ205's open-deck limits its ceiling relative to a built EJ207 for high-boost applications.
- Is the EJ20 reliable?
- At stock power levels, the EJ20T (turbocharged variant) is generally reliable with proper oil maintenance (full synthetic, 5,000 km intervals) and coolant system attention. The most documented failure mode is head gasket failure on EJ20G open-deck engines (GC8 WRX, 1992–1996). EJ207 examples with clean service history are regarded as more durable than EJ205 at similar power levels due to the closed-deck block.
