SR20DET
The SR20DET is a 2.0-litre DOHC turbocharged inline-four produced by Nissan from 1989 to 2002. It powered the Silvia S13, S14, and S15 as well as the 180SX and Pulsar GTI-R, among others. The engine uses a T25 (S13 redtop) or T28 (S14/S15) turbocharger and ceramic-coil direct ignition. Its balance of lightweight construction, aftermarket support, and tunability made it a foundational platform for Japan's domestic drifting scene and globally for circuit-style motorsport.

Common issues
Crankshaft position sensor failure
Cause: Heat-soak near turbo; plastic shroud degrades over time.
Remedy: Replace sensor and reroute wiring away from turbo heat source.
Oil consumption at high mileage
Cause: Valve stem seals degrade; piston ring end-gap opens on high-km engines.
Remedy: Valve stem seal replacement; compression test to assess ring condition.
Rod bearing wear at high power
Cause: OEM bearing clearances are tight; high oil temp and boost degrade lubrication film.
Remedy: ACL or King race bearings on any engine built for sustained >300 whp. Oil cooler recommended.
T28 turbo shaft wear (S14/S15)
Cause: Oil feed restriction or infrequent oil changes.
Remedy: Check oil feed line. Replace turbo if shaft play exceeds 0.1mm axial.
Tuning ceiling
~300 whp on stock bottom end with bolt-ons (boost increase, exhaust, intake, ECU tune). Stock rods are the limiting factor; rod failure risk rises noticeably above 350 whp.
Boost controller, front-mount intercooler, exhaust 3", intake, ECU tune (PowerFC or Nistune).
Larger injectors (550cc), walbro 255 pump, standalone ECU, upgraded clutch.
Manley rods/pistons, GT3071 or similar, ported head, external wastegate.
Common modifications
- Nistune or PowerFC ECU piggyback / standalone
- Front-mount intercooler (FMIC)
- 3" downpipe and exhaust
- HKS or Tial blow-off valve
- Walbro 255lph fuel pump
- 740cc or 1,000cc injectors (Stage 2+)
- Tomei or Kelford cams (Stage 3)
Frequently asked questions
- What is the SR20DET's stock power output?
- JDM-spec output varies by generation: the S13 Redtop made 205 PS, the S14 K's 220 PS, and the S15 Spec-R 220 PS. Export-market figures are often lower due to different fuelling and boost maps.
- Is the SR20DET reliable?
- The SR20DET is generally reliable to around 150,000 km with proper maintenance (fresh oil every 5,000 km, coolant system in good order). The primary failure mode at high power levels is connecting-rod failure; stock rods are not considered suitable above approximately 300–320 whp sustained.
- What chassis use the SR20DET?
- The SR20DET was fitted to the Nissan Silvia S13, S14, and S15; the 180SX (RPS13); the Pulsar GTI-R (RNN14); the Bluebird SSS (U13); and the Primera P10, among others.
- What turbo does the SR20DET use stock?
- The S13 Redtop used a Garrett T25, while the S14 and S15 used a Garrett T28. The Pulsar GTI-R used a different mapping with a larger compressor to support its AWD layout and 230 PS output.
- How much power can the SR20DET make reliably?
- With stock internals, 280–300 whp is a commonly cited practical ceiling for street use. Above that, rod failure risk increases. With Manley or Eagle rods and forged pistons, 400+ whp is achievable on appropriate supporting modifications.
